(Danville) — City leaders are ready to move two of their departments into the former White Mill.
The Industrial Development Authority is working with the Alexander Company to redevelop the Old Number Eight Mill. The IDA owns most of the first floor and a portion of the second.
Danville City Council votes next week on a proposal to renovate nearly 86-hundred square feet on the second floor to house Danville’s Office of Economic Development. They would also renovate more than 12-thousand square feet on the first floor, turning it into the new home for Danville Parks and Recreation.
Several years ago, a City-wide space needs study cited improvements were needed for these two departments. Staffers say moving them to Dan River Falls would improve operational efficiencies, increase collaboration among team members, provide for better managerial oversight and accountability, and enhance the quality of workplace. Staffers say that will also help with employee recruitment and retention.
For Parks and Recreation, the city envisions a one-stop shop for residents and visitors doing business with the department. It will also be next to the new Riverfront Park, the Riverwalk Trail, and the proposed Whitewater channel. For Economic Development, the office will offer a good first impression for people interested in expanding businesses or opening new ones in the city.
The project qualifies for the Historic Tax Credit program, which is expected to cover about 30% of the estimated $5.6 million cost. This means a final net cost of about $3.6 million.
