Planners recommend new restrictions along West Main
(Danville) — Danville planners are recommending
another restriction along one of the city’s growing gateways.
Last year the city established the West Main Corridor Overlay District. It runs along West Main from the North Carolina line to the intersection at Rison Street. The District governs new development along the corridor, which is the route many travelers are taking into Danville to visit the casino.
Planning Director Renee Burton is recommending the city add car washes as a prohibited use in the district. “This would apply to any type of car wash, automatic or otherwise,” Burton told the Danville Planning Commission.
There are already 20 other businesses that are not allowed along that stretch of road. That includes check cashing businesses, vape stores, second hand shops, junkyards, massage parlors and tanning facilities.
The overlay district calls for new commercial or multi-family development to have at least 15% open space. At least half of a business’ parking must be behind the building.
Burton says any existing car washes will be grandfathered in. Danville City Council will vote on the car wash restriction when they meet in early May.
