(Danville) — A Danville man will spend the rest of his life in prison for a shooting death last year.
Judge James Reynolds last month found 34-year old Omar Rashad Chandler guilty of first degree murder and weapons counts in shooting death of 38-year old Randy Lamar Womack of Danville. On Tuesday Reynolds handed down a life sentence.
It happened last May in the 700 block of Hughes Street. Danville Police found Womack suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He was taken to SOVAH Health and pronounced dead. Police arrested Chandler hours later. Chandler said Womack was not his intended target.
Witnesses at Tuesday’s sentencing say Chandler screamed and cursed at Judge Reynolds after he handed down the life sentence.
Danville Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Newman said local law enforcement put a lot of hours into the arrest and prosecution. “This was a collaborative effort between the Danville Police Department and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office to make sure a violent offender was taken off the streets,” Newman said. “This could not have happened without the assistance of citizens who were willing to cooperate and testify as to what they saw.”
