(Hurt) — Developers hope to land some grant dollars to pay for a rehabilitation project in the far northern end of Pittsylvania County.
Last year, the town of Hurt used ARPA money to buy the Staunton Plaza Shopping Center for $165,000. Staunton River Supervisor Tim Dudley says the plan is to apply for grant money to spruce up the center. “We want to apply for grant money to upgrade the plaza roof and to refurbish the facade,” Dudley told fellow members of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors earlier this week.
Dudley says a refurbished plaza could work hand-in-hand with a couple of other nearby projects to bring Hurt back to life. “Hopefully, with Staunton River Plastics coming to the former Klopman plant, and there’s a solar facility being built on the backside of this, its in a perfect place since it can’t be seen,” Dudley said. “Hopefully this will revitalize and bring some attraction to our local town.”
It was four years ago when Staunton River Plastics announced a new facility in the Southern Virginia Multimodal Complex in Hurt. It’ll mean 200 new jobs and $34 million in capital investments.
Danville joined Pittsylvania County and the town of Hurt to form the Staunton River Regional Industrial Facility Authority in 2018.
The plaza was built in the 70s, but has been mostly empty for over a decade.
