(Danville) — The local airport is in line for some major upgrades.
Danville City Council this week voted unanimously to accept a three-and-a-half million-dollar State Aviation Capital Grant for Site Prep Construction Projects at Danville Regional Airport.
This will clear the way for construction of the new 12,000 square-foot Aviation Training Facility and the development of 80-by-80-foot corporate hangars in the T-hangar building near the south ramp.
The Training Facility will be used by both Danville Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Program and Averett University’s Aeronautics Program. It is designed to enhance the programs at both schools by providing advanced education, research and training. The facility will also spur economic growth, advanced education opportunities and enhanced site improvements to Danville Regional Airport.
The grant approved this week will also develop a 30-space parking lot and build a new access road in that area.
The agreement includes a local share of nearly 400-thousand dollars.
