(Richmond) — Danville’s unemployment rate is suddenly the highest in Virginia.
The Virginia Employment Commission Wednesday released jobless figures for July. It showed a 6.2% rate in Danville. That’s the city’s highest rate since August 2021, in the middle of the pandemic.
The rate is more than a percent higher than it was a month ago and a year ago. It edged out Petersburg for the highest rate in Virginia.
Elsewhere in the region, rates are also up. Pittsylvania County is back at four-percent for the first time in three years. That’s nearly nearly a full percent from July-2023.
Halifax County’s rate is up to 4.8%…also nearly a percent higher than a year ago. Henry County’s 4.1% rate was up only modestly from the prior year. Martinsville’s July jobless rate was 5.4%. That’s the fifth-highest in the state.
