What began as a simple celebration of regional music has evolved into something much more meaningful: a festival that weaves together Danville’s musical heritage, community pride, and charitable purpose into one unforgettable evening under the stars.
This year’s lineup reflects the deep roots and bright future of bluegrass in Central Virginia. The evening opens at 6:00 PM with Jason Talbott and Jay Shelton, local musicians whose Americana and folk-rooted sound sets the perfect tone for the night ahead. Their performance embodies the grassroots spirit that makes this festival special—hometown talent sharing the stage with national acts.
Following at 6:30 PM, Shelton & Williams takes the stage, featuring Jeanette and Johnny Williams alongside Jay Shelton, joined by the renowned Clyde Bailey and Ron Inscore. This ensemble exemplifies the festival’s mission of blending traditional bluegrass with contemporary influences, creating music that honors the past while speaking to modern audiences.
The evening culminates with The Lonesome River Band at 8:00 PM—a Grammy-nominated powerhouse with over four decades of experience and 15 albums to their credit.
Beyond the melodies lies a deeper purpose that sets Bluegrass by the River apart from typical music festivals. Proceeds from the event support Project Lifesaver, a vital search and rescue program led by Sheriff Mike Mondul. This innovative initiative provides tracking devices for individuals with cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease and autism, offering peace of mind to families and potentially life-saving assistance to vulnerable community members.
The festival also honors one of Danville’s most celebrated musical sons through its support of Pam Rice, widow of legendary bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice. Born in Danville, Tony Rice’s innovative playing style and musical vision influenced generations of musicians worldwide. By supporting his widow, the festival creates a living connection between Danville’s musical past and its vibrant present.
Festival-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, creating a relaxed, picnic-like atmosphere that fosters community connection. Local craft beer and wine flow alongside regional food offerings, making the event a true celebration of Central Virginia’s artisanal culture.
At around $10 per ticket, Bluegrass by the River remains refreshingly accessible, reflecting organizers’ commitment to community engagement over profit. Tickets, sold through Eventbrite and at the winery’s tasting room, typically sell out quickly—a testament to the festival’s growing reputation and the community’s enthusiasm for supporting local culture. The festival’s rain-or-shine policy speaks to the dedication of both organizers and attendees. When you’re celebrating music that has weathered decades of change and challenge, a little rain will not dampen the spirit.
